Where to stay in Busan:
the base decides the trip
Busan is not a city with a centre. It is a 40 km ribbon of separate towns wrapped around a coastline and cut apart by mountains — Haeundae to Gamcheon is about an hour each way, every time. The #1 planning mistake is booking the famous beach and then commuting daily to the postcard sights on the opposite side of the city.
Gwangalli for most first trips — beach, bridge view, Saturday drone show, and 20 minutes on Line 2 to Haeundae when you want the famous sand. Haeundae if you're booking a resort or travelling with kids. Seomyeon if budget leads: hotels around ₩100,000 (~$70) a night where Lines 1 and 2 cross, which halves almost every commute in the city. Nampo if old Busan — markets, BIFF, Gamcheon — is the point. Pick one base and accept the commutes, or split deliberately: two nights east, one night west.

Split the stay: two nights east, one night west
The play nobody suggestsPick one base and accept the commutes, or split deliberately — two nights east (Haeundae or Gwangalli) plus one night west (Nampo). What fails is booking Haeundae for the name and then trying to 'do' the west side daily: that's two hours of metro every day of your trip.
The split works because your luggage moves once, in the right direction: check out of Gwangalli or Haeundae after breakfast, drop bags at a Nampo hotel 45–60 minutes away, and you're standing in Jagalchi Market by lunchtime with Gamcheon and the Songdo cable car in the same afternoon. Hotels handle early bag-drop as standard, and the metro runs the whole route for about ₩1,600 (~$1.10).
Three nights is the modal answer from people who've done it, two is the floor, and past five you'll start repeating yourself. On a Korea trip of under 9 days, 'stay in Seoul' is a legitimate answer — the KTX transfer costs a morning, not a day, but on a short trip that morning is expensive. On the modal three-night trip, that's the 2+1 split — and it beats commuting the ribbon twice a day for three days.
